Nice Job, Me

I saw this little post out on the tubes this morning. Tim over at Gothridge Manor has named me the Newbie Blogger of the Month. Thanks for the recognition, Tim.

Joesky's Tithe... But Not Really:

This more of question about class and race in D&D (and a cry for help) than a tithe. I like having both class and race in D&D. But I totally understand the point that has been made for race as class: basically an elf warrior would certainly be in most ways a completely different type of warrior than a human fighter. So is there a way to do both?

I would like to find a way to make a sort of racial class option or even requirement for my 3X mash-up (similar to 4e's racial paragon classes). Has anyone ever tried anything like this before?

D&D bloggers! Give me your wisdom!

  1. I don't see why you can't have racial classes that do a similar job as race as a class. There are plenty of d20 'paragon' classes. Look at this if you have not done so before.

I am not recommending this exact paragon as your solution - but it gives you a template to follow to build your elf-fighting-wizard that fits your game. I'd suggest you also look to the fighting wizard prestige classes around for inspiration as well.

  2. In a lot of D20 WotC Products there were "substitution levels" as well - you could exchange the normal class level with some other feats or abillities. Lose some, gain some.

  3. I've seen quite a few settings that add feats with a race requirement and make those feats most mechanically distinct and requirements for a prestige class. Paradigm Concepts world of Arcanis did this well with their Elorii (their vision of elves).

  4. Thanks, everybody. I appreciate the help. I am not sure exactly how I am going not go about it. I just want to be sure that an elf fighter is more than just a skinny fighter with a high dex.

  5. hey hedge...congratulations on your ascent in the d&d blogosphere. i dropped your name at the old pink and got in for half off. by the way...we should play some nwn sometime, if your not too busy.
